I travel a lot for my job which gave me the opportunity to drop in many gyms (oly lifting/jiu jitsu) all over the country and other parts of the world. I’ve met some awesome people and got some good lifts/rolls in. What I’ve noticed from every single gym is that there are always beginners there, of all ages, from every walk of life, all there for different reasons. I’ve been on this “fitness journey” or whatever you want to call it, for a while now and I almost forget what it’s like to start from scratch.

It takes a tremendous amount of courage and humility to step on the mat for the first time, or pick up a barbell for the first time. Honestly I admire beginners more than I do seasoned athletes because it takes swallowing so much pride and ego to learn something new that challenges you mentally and physically. And honestly, it might even be scary for some.

Getting back on the mat has been a humbling experience for me and I am over joyed seeing new people come in. I know how much courage it takes to put on that gi and not know what to expect. ESPECIALLY with bjj being a combat sport. Showing up and committing is the hardest part in my opinion. Getting strangled is inevitable lol

Olympic weightlifting also takes a lot of courage. Having to trust yourself enough to pull and get under that bar is a skill in itself. Putting weight over your head is scary but I LOVE seeing people try it for the first time and coming to realize the time and patience it takes.

Every time I walk in the gym or step on the mat, I feel so thankful and humble to train with people from all levels. There is so much to learn about yourself and what you’re capable of from these sports and there’s always something to learn from every person you meet along the way.

Stay humble.

Always with love, jade
